Chambéry is 14 miles (22 km) from the chateau. Chambéry is the birthplace and historic capital of Savoie, Chambéry enjoys an important heritage and numerous accounts of its prestigious past. Chambéry the Italian, the heart of the States of Savoie, from the 11th century until its incorporation to France in 1860 is really a history lesson. From the shores of the Bourget Lake to the Combe de Savoie, the vineyards of Savoie display the softness of the pre-alpine landscapes. Chambéry's 13th century historic city center, now a pedestrian area, displays its mansions, its fountains, its graceful indoor staircases, its inner courts with their aristocratic turrets, its busy alleys, its trompe l'oeil art… The heart of the old town is still Place Saint Léger, where people can stroll and meet. Each end opens on to streets with suggestive names and which have kept their former look : rue Juiverie, rue Basse du Château, rue du Sénat, rue Croix d'Or... The most beautiful mansions are in rue Croix d'Or : the Hôtel de Châteauneuf in the 17th century manner with its beautiful listed railings, the Hôtel des Marches with its Louis XVI façade and its fine staircase, and the Hôtel de la Pérouse with the Flamming Heart fountain.
